FREMONT — There will be times this year when the Washington High football team is going to put up some spectacular offensive numbers. The Huskies have the players who can do it like wide receiver Rahsaan Vaughn, running back Elbert Kirby and a raw quarterback in David Ross.
Then there are going to be games like Saturday night’s opener against Petaluma at Tak Fudenna Stadium in which the offense seems completely out of synch.
The game featured plenty of mistakes you would expect in a first game — seven combined fumbles, three interceptions and several penalties. And when the dust settled, Petaluma claimed a 10-7 nonleague win.
“We can break it open at any time,” Washington coach Ken Wittmer said. “We know we can. We need to bring the toughness.”
It may take some time to get it together — something you would expect after graduating 25 players from a team that went to the semifinals of the North Coast Section 3A East Bay playoffs.
This year’s version of the Huskies had trouble offensively for most of the night. Nearly all of Washington’s big offensive plays resulted in a fumble or an interception. The Huskies had trouble with the exchange from the center to quarterback. They had issues with players dropping passes and — until the fourth quarter — were held out of the end zone.
Ross finished 7-for-18 passing with 175 yards passing and one TD, an 82-yard reception by Kirby late in the fourth quarter that cut Petaluma’s lead to 10-7. Vaughn finished with 51 yards receiving on four receptions.

Argus' Waterhouse gave no credit to Petaluma's defense. They turned out to be pretty good and there's no shame in playing them tight.
